Sunisa Lee has announced her return to gymnastics training two years before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
What happened?
On July 14, two-time Olympic gold medallist Sunisa Lee posted an Instagram video with the caption “I’m back.” The clip featured career highlights and closed with the line: “This is more than a comeback, stay tuned.” USA Gymnastics welcomed her return in a post on X that included her video.
Why it matters for Sunisa Lee
Lee became the first Asian American woman to win Olympic gold in the women’s all-around at Tokyo 2020. She added a bronze on uneven bars and a silver in the team event. In 2023 she was diagnosed with two serious kidney diseases and told she might never compete again. Doctors ordered weeks of bed rest and she took five months off gymnastics while managing medication side effects.
What comes next?
She returned in time for Paris 2024 and won three medals: team gold, all-around bronze and uneven bars bronze. Now she’s back in the gym with Los Angeles 2028 in sight. “I know what I’m capable of,” Lee said in the video. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there.”
